Movement as Medicine: An Introduction to Essentrics

Millions of American adults suffer from chronic musculoskeletal pain such as back spasms, throbbing joints and arthritis aches. The good news is that chronic pain does not have to be an inevitable consequence of aging, illness or injury.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is most often caused by an imbalance in one’s musculature, poorly-aligned joints or malfunctioning connective tissue. People who suffer chronic pain often become sedentary, afraid that movement will make things worse. But as we move less, our muscles become weak, our posture worsens, our connective tissues stiffen and our energy decreases. Gentle movement that emphasizes balance, clean alignment, muscle strength and full connective tissue mobility is the key to preventing and healing chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Essentrics is a full-body exercise program that strengthens and lengthens the muscles, decompresses the joints and rebalances the body’s muscular structure. Created by Miranda Esmonde-White, an anti-aging educator who has spent decades helping professional athletes, ballet dancers and Olympians overcome potentially career-ending injuries and guiding MS patients and cancer survivors toward painfree mobility.
